The Castle of the Wicked Witch of the West stands as the central seat of evil power in the western quadrant of Oz, a place of captivity, cruelty, and eventual liberation. It is from this fortress that the Witch, who possesses only one eye yet can see everywhere like a telescope, rules over the Winkies with an iron fist, keeping them in bondage for many years. The castle is not merely a residence but the operational heart of the Witch's tyranny, where she plots the destruction of her enemies and enslaves all who fall into her hands.

Location and Appearance

The castle is situated in the untilled, rough, and hilly country of the West, far from the farms and houses of the Munchkin Country. It is a place of stark isolation, with no road leading to it, as the Guardian of the Gates notes that no one ever wishes to go that way. The structure itself is described as having beautiful rooms, a kitchen, and a courtyard with a high iron fence, but its beauty is overshadowed by the malevolent purpose it serves. The Witch sits in her doorway, using her telescopic eye to survey her domain, and from this vantage point she first spots Dorothy and her companions lying asleep in her country, prompting her to unleash her minions against them.

The Witch's Powers and Defenses

The castle is the command center for the Witch's arsenal of magical and natural weapons. From here, she blows a silver whistle to summon a pack of great wolves with long legs and fierce eyes, a flock of wild crows that darken the sky, and a swarm of black bees. When these are defeated, she sends her Winkie slaves with sharp spears, though they are easily frightened away by the Cowardly Lion. The Witch's ultimate defense is the Golden Cap, kept in her cupboard, which allows her to call upon the Winged Monkeys. She uses this charm for the third and final time to order the destruction of the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman, and the capture of the Lion and Dorothy. The Monkeys carry out these commands, dropping the Tin Woodman on sharp rocks, scattering the Scarecrow's straw, and binding the Lion with ropes before placing him in the castle's small yard with a high iron fence.

Dorothy's Captivity and the Witch's Downfall

Upon Dorothy's arrival at the castle, the Witch is both surprised and worried by the mark of the Good Witch's kiss on the girl's forehead, which prevents her from harming Dorothy directly. She also trembles with fear at the sight of the Silver Shoes, knowing their powerful charm, but she realizes Dorothy is unaware of their power. The Witch forces Dorothy into servitude, ordering her to clean pots and kettles, sweep the floor, and keep the fire fed with wood. The Witch threatens to beat Dorothy with an old umbrella but dares not strike her because of the protective mark. She also attempts to starve the Lion into submission, but Dorothy secretly brings him food from the cupboard each night. The Witch's cunning leads her to steal one of the Silver Shoes by making an invisible iron bar in the kitchen floor, causing Dorothy to trip. Enraged, Dorothy throws a bucket of water over the Witch, who instantly begins to shrink and melt away like brown sugar, crying out that water is the end of her. The Witch dissolves into a brown, shapeless mass, which Dorothy sweeps out the door, leaving only the silver shoe behind.

Aftermath and Liberation

With the Witch's death, the castle is transformed from a prison into a place of freedom. Dorothy immediately unlocks the gate of the Lion's prison and sets him free. She then calls all the Winkies together and tells them they are no longer slaves, leading to great rejoicing and a holiday of feasting and dancing. The Winkies, who had been treated with great cruelty for many years, are now free. The castle becomes the Yellow Castle, a base from which Dorothy and the Lion organize the rescue of the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow. The Winkies carry the battered Tin Woodman back to the castle, where tinsmiths work for three days and four nights to mend him. The Scarecrow's clothes are retrieved from a tall tree and stuffed with clean straw. The castle thus becomes a site of restoration and reunion before the travelers depart for the Emerald City to claim their rewards from Oz.
